PRESS REPORT ON OUR SHOW
A RECESSION-BUSTING night of glitz, glamour and champagne has raised more than £6,300 in six hours for charity. Designer boutique Maggie and Co decided to go ahead with its annual fashion shows at Torquay's Imperial Hotel as a positive statement despite the gloomy economic climate. And fashionistas turned out in their hundreds for the over-the top catwalk show, despite fears there wouldn't be much demand for the £15-a-ticket event.
Money is still coming in, but so far this year more than £6,300 has been raised for the British Lung Foundation.
The boutique on The Strand has now donated more than £18,000 in the last two years to the British Lung Foundation locally and nationally.
John Taylor, of Maggie and Co, said: "We are elated. The evening event was a sell-out and the atmosphere was electric. The afternoon show was busier than last year. People thought we wouldn't go ahead with a show this year but we are glad we did.
"It was heart-warming how much people want to support this charity. We even had one little old lady who came into the shop and said she couldn't afford to come to the show, but she turned her
purse upside down and gave us all her change. It was touching.
"If there was ever a year when we weren't going to have a fashion show, it should have been
this one. Now Maggie's already planning next year's show."
The red carpet affair - featuring 60 outfits by the world's top designers-to-the-stars - pulled out
all the stops with dancers and professional models.
Maggie and Co this year teamed up with Cody Men's Outfitters and acclaimed Newton Abbot hairdresser
Andrew Hill for the shows. Last year, the money bought four new electronic beds for Torbay Hospital's respiratory unit.
